A driver suspected of driving under the influence was arrested after a deadly crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento that killed a construction worker and injured two other crew members, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Lt. Kris Rolin, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol South Sacramento division, said the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. on eastbound Highway 50 as a Caltrans-contracted construction crew was working on the Fix50 project.
According to Rolin, the driver was traveling eastbound when the driver noticed construction and swerved to the right. The vehicle then crashed into a crew vehicle.
Rolin said the force of the collision threw a crew member who was outside the vehicle off the overpass and onto Stockton Boulevard below. That worker died, officials said.
Two other crew members who were inside the vehicle were taken to the hospital, Rolin said. Their conditions are not known.
After the initial crash, the driver continued on and struck another vehicle, according to CHP. The driver of that second vehicle followed the first driver and called CHP until officers caught up near Highway 50 and 65th Street.
CHP then arrested the first driver. Rolin said the driver who hit the construction crew’s vehicle will likely face hit-and-run and suspected DUI charges.
Investigators remained at the scene for hours, blocking Highway 50 and the eastbound onramp from Stockton Boulevard. Those roads have since reopened.
