Sacramento Superior Court launches criminal case access on eCourt

Sacramento Superior Court has added criminal case information to its eCourt platform, expanding the electronic system the court has been rolling out in phases since 2023.

The court announced Aug. 3 that criminal case information would be launched on eCourt, with availability beginning Aug. 10. The move replaces the court’s longtime Public Case Access System with eCourt, an electronic case management system developed by Journal Technologies.

"The launch of criminal case information on eCourt is the result of years of planning, collaboration, and dedication by court staff and our justice partners", said Court Executive Officer Kelly Sullivan. "This milestone represents an effort that will streamline court operations and management of criminal case information."

Under the update, users can search criminal case information in eCourt by a party’s first and last name, last name and first initial, or case number. Information available through the system includes case numbers, hearing dates, and calendar details such as upcoming court appearances. The portal will also allow the electronic submission of some documents in criminal cases.

The criminal case rollout is the latest step in the court’s broader transition to a unified electronic case management system. The court first introduced eCourt in May 2023 for civil and probate case information. Small claims and unlawful detainer case information were added in June 2024, followed by Juvenile case information in July 2024.

For people seeking to review publicly available criminal case information, the court said public kiosks are available on the second floor of the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse. Legacy paper case files that have not yet been digitized will still be available for in-person review upon request, subject to record availability.

"The court is continually looking for ways to improve the experience of those who interact with our justice system while preserving the protections required for confidential and sensitive information", said Sullivan. "The addition of criminal case information to eCourt provides the public, attorneys and justice partners with a more efficient way to access important case information and reflects our commitment to a modern and accessible court system."
